Vista continues to elevate expectations with new reproductive label claim

Intervet Inc. announces a new USDA-approved Vista vaccine label claim. Vista now is the only modified-live vaccine (MLV) for cattle labeled as an aid in the prevention of Fetal Infection, including persistently infected (PI) calves caused by Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD) Type 1.

“This label claim proves Vista vaccines provide reproductive protection from BVD Type 1 for the entire pregnancy,” says Scott Nordstrom, D.V.M., Intervet Veterinary Services Manager. “Vista not only protects for persistent infection from BVD Type 1during the first trimester of pregnancy, but also provides protection against congenital infections (CI) in the second and third trimesters.”

Vista is the new MLV respiratory and reproductive vaccine introduced in 2005 by Intervet. Vista vaccine provides the most complete disease protection available against Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR), BVD Type 1 and Type 2, Bovine Respiratory Syncytial Virus (BRSV), Parainfluenza3 (PI3), with either Pasteurella multocida/Mannheimia haemolytica or Leptospira (including hardjo-bovis) and Camplyobacter fetus (Vibriosis) combinations.

Protection Against Fetal Infection

The U.S. Department of Agriculture categorically defines BVD virus fetal protection (FP) as: 1) BVD protection against persistent infections (first trimester), 2) BVD protection against abortions (generally occurring in late second trimester), and 3) BVD protection against fetal infections (third trimester). Vista is the only vaccine that has been proven to provide fetal infection protection for the entire pregnancy.

Nordstrom says protection against fetal infection is a critical first step to ensuring the ultimate health of a beef or dairy herd.

“The greatest BVD threat comes from in-utero fetal infections,” says Nordstrom. “If we can prevent the BVD virus from infecting the fetus, we can prevent PI calves from ever developing. PI calves develop in gestation after a first trimester BVD infection. It’s important to remember that a PI prevention claim doesn’t translate to fetal infection protection. Vista has proven that it will prevent the late term gestational infections.”

BVD, Fetal Infection and PI

The impact of BVD is profound, reported to cost the beef and dairy industries approximately $1 billion per year, with a cost upwards of $20 per cow per year for a single PI animal in a herd. PI calves never eradicate the BVD virus from their body and are capable of repeatedly shedding the virus to other cattle — often without clinical signs of the disease.

Fetal infection caused by BVD is the precursor to PI and can lead to early embryonic death, abortion, birth defects and stunted growth. In addition, the BVD virus compromises the animal’s immune system, making these animals even more susceptible to other diseases.

Nordstrom says the critical time frame for vaccination is prebreeding. For optimal protection, an MLV with BVD Types 1 and 2 should be administered approximately 30 days prior to breeding season.

“The key message here is the need for a diligent prebreeding vaccination program,” says Nordstrom. “Special consideration must be given to protecting the unborn fetus.”

Proven Protection

Vista offers the most complete respiratory and reproductive protection available in an MLV. The vaccine has demonstrated cell-mediated immune response for IBR, BVD Type 1 and Type 2 and BRSV, as well as reproductive durations of immunity (DOI) for IBR of 217 days, BVD Type 1 of 206 days and BVD Type 2 of 112 days. Vista also has respiratory DOI for IBR of 182 days, BVD Type 1 of 206 days and BVD Type 2 of 200 days. In addition, no other MLV vaccine combines this superior five-way viral efficacy with a five-way Leptospira that includes protection for Vibriosis and L. borgpetersenii serovar hardjo-bovis.

Vista is compliant with Beef Quality Assurance recommendations with vaccination consisting of a single, 2-mL dose administered in the neck subcutaneously. Refer to the carton for complete vaccination directions. Annual revaccination is recommended.

Vista is available through veterinarians or animal-health suppliers. For more information about Vista and the full line of Intervet cattle products, contact Intervet Customer Service at 1-800-441-8272 or visit www.intervetusa.com.
