Frank Regan, Waukon, Iowa, Dairyman of the Year, Steve Larson, Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, Industry Person of the Year
The winners of the 2007 World Dairy Expo Dairyman of the Year and Industry Person of the Year awards both share a sense of hard work, creativity and industry vision.
Frank Regan of Waukon, Iowa, is the winner of the Dairyman of the Year award and Steve Larson of Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, is the winner of the Industry Person of the Year award. Both awards are sponsored by Schering-Plough Animal Health and will be presented at the World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin, Oct. 2-6.
“Schering-Plough Animal Health is proud to recognize the contributions of these dairy industry leaders,” said Rick Sibbel, DVM and Director, Global Ruminant Technical Services, Schering-Plough. “As a leading innovator and manufacturer of vaccines and pharmaceuticals, we believe it is important to recognize these leaders and their efforts to help to keep the dairy industry efficient and profitable.”
Regan has created a herd prefix that is one of the most respected in the Holstein cattle industry worldwide and has exported animals to over five countries and embryos to over 12. Regan’s matings have produced 77 Dams of Merit, 121 Excellent animals, 354 cows with over 100,000 pounds of milk lifetime and 11 cows with over 200,000 pounds.
“Genetics and fertility will continue to be important to the future of our industry,” Regan says. “As producers, we need to pay close attention to fertility so that our cows breed back quickly and produce more milk.”
Larson is managing editor of Hoard’s Dairyman, one of the most respected and recognized publications in the dairy industry. Larson’s editorials and Washington news are known for their impact in educating producers and opening dialogue on complex dairy policy and milk marketing programs.
“I continue to be impressed by the young people, and some not so young, who want to get into dairying,” Larson says. “Just like all consumers, we should appreciate the tireless efforts of dairymen and dairywomen to produce the high-quality milk that becomes the dairy products we all enjoy.”
