Vista™ portfolio of protection expands to aid in the prevention of urinary shedding of L. hardjo organisms
Intervet Inc., a global leader in livestock vaccine research and development, announces a new Lepto hardjo label claim specific to the Vista 5 L5 SQ, L5 SQ and VL5 SQ products. These Intervet Lepto products are now labeled as an aid in the prevention of urinary shedding of Leptospira hardjo organisms, in addition to aiding in the prevention of Leptospirosis caused by L. hardjo – including the L. borgpetersenii serovar hardjo-bovis, L. canicola, L. grippotyphosa, L. icterohaemorrhagiae, and L. pomona.
“Because Lepto hardjo primarily is transmitted via the urine of an infected animal, a vaccine that aids in the prevention of urinary shedding is paramount to protection,” says Intervet Veterinary Services Manager Scott Nordstrom, D.V.M. “Regular herd vaccination is the best approach for protecting cattle from this costly disease. Unfortunately, even in herds with adequate protection that has been developed through a sound vaccination program, some cattle may be infected with Lepto hardjo with no signs of the disease. This underscores the importance of reducing the incidence of urine shedding.”
The type of L. hardjo (L. interrogans serovar hardjo — Type: hardjo-prajitno) contained in Vista 5 L5 SQ, L5 SQ and VL5 SQ vaccines demonstrated 100 percent protection from urine shedding of Lepto hardjo (L. borgpetersenii serovar hardjo — Type: hardjo-bovis) following a virulent challenge. Vista 5 L5 SQ vaccine is the only product available to provide single-dose Lepto hardjo-bovis protection in combination with a 5-way viral.
“The new Lepto hardjo urinary shedding label claim provides an added layer of assurance for veterinarians and producers and further signifies Intervet’s commitment to the development of breakthrough products that deliver the most complete protection and the greatest return on investment,” says Jeff Baxter, Intervet Marketing Manager, Cattle Vaccines.
Vista, the premier modified-live vaccine (MLV) for cattle, provides the most complete protection available against Bovine Viral Diarrhea Type 1 and Type 2, Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis, Bovine Respiratory Syncytial Virus and Parainfluenza3, with either Lepto (including hardjo-bovis) or Pasteurella multocida/Mannheimia haemolytica combinations.
