Vista® Vaccine new DOI Claims Mean Longer Respiratory and Reproductive Protection

22 September 2006

Millsboro, Delaware

Intervet Inc. announces new longer respiratory and reproductive durations of immunity (DOI) for its Vista vaccine line. Recent USDA-awarded DOI claims for Vista extended the respiratory protection of this vaccine, ensuring the longest-protection from the most common and costly respiratory diseases affecting cattle.

Vista’s respiratory DOI has been demonstrated to be at least 182 days for Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR), 206 days for Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD) Type 1 and at least 200 days for BVD Type 2. In addition, extended reproductive DOI has been demonstrated for IBR (217 days), BVD Type 1 (206 days) and BVD Type 2 (112 days).

“Beef and dairy producers have enough things to worry about; spreading drought conditions and a volatile market, just to name a few,” says Scott Nordstrom, D.V.M., Intervet Veterinary Services Manager. “Vista provides producers something they can count on – the most complete protection for their vaccination program. With Vista, producers can be assured that one vaccination will provide proven long-lasting protection against IBR and BVD.”

Vista is the modified-live respiratory and reproductive vaccine introduced in 2005 by Intervet, the world’s leading manufacturer of veterinary vaccines. Vista vaccines provide the most complete disease protection available against IBR, BVD Type 1 and Type 2, Bovine Respiratory Syncytial Virus (BRSV), Parainfluenza3 (PI3), with either Pasteurella multocida/Mannheimia haemolytica or Leptospira (including hardjo-bovis) and Camplyobacter fetus (Vibriosis) combinations. In addition, the vaccine has demonstrated cell-mediated immune response for IBR, BVD

Proven Long-lasting Respiratory and Reproductive DOI for IBR and BVD

A DOI claim doesn’t always mean an equal DOI has been established for both respiratory and reproductive diseases caused by IBR and BVD Type 1 and 2. Nordstrom says that challenge studies should be conducted for both respiratory and reproductive problems separately because these diseases are caused by a number of different strains.

For example, Nordstrom says that the BVD Type 2 1373 strain is extremely pathological from a respiratory perspective so this strain was used to determine the respiratory DOI. However, another strain – proven equally pathological, but from a reproductive perspective – was used to determine the reproductive BVD Type 2 DOI. The same rules apply with IBR. Different strains create more severe respiratory problems, while others pose a more severe threat to the reproductive health of the herd.

“At the end of the day, our goal is to ensure the producer’s peace of mind,” says Nordstrom. “Vista offers the longest respiratory DOI available, to provide producers with more assurance.”

The Most Complete Protection

“Intervet continues to conduct field based trials to demonstrate the safety and efficacy of the Vista vaccine line offering,” says Jeff Baxter, Intervet Marketing Manager, Cattle Vaccines. “Vista came to market with the most research supporting its safety and efficacy of any cattle vaccine, but we aren’t stopping there. Assurance of long-term protection from costly diseases, like IBR and BVD, is a necessity for producers to manage disease risk, which is why Intervet continues to invest heavily in post-launch trials reaffirming the unequalled protection the Vista vaccine line delivers.”

Complementing these new DOI claims, Vista has been recently USDA-approved as an aid in the prevention of Fetal Infection, including persistently infected (PI) calves caused by BVD Type 1, making Vista the only vaccine proven to provide fetal infection protection for the entire pregnancy.
