New program outlines essential first steps in foal healthcare

Intervet Inc. announces the Intervet Foal Care Program, the industry’s first integrated foal-health program developed especially to help horse owners keep track of important milestones in their foals’ development and healthcare.

“The first year of the foal’s life is critical,” says Wendy Vaala, V.D.M., Dipl. A.C.V.I.M., Intervet Equine Technical Services Specialist, and one of the foremost equine neonatal experts in the country. “The Intervet Foal Care Program is designed to take a horse owner through the entire foaling process, beginning with the health of the mare, and continuing through the first year of the foal’s life.”

The Intervet Foal Care program includes information to track growth and medical history, as well as information on how to evaluate, monitor, feed, vaccinate and deworm the foal. The new Web site, www.FoalCare.com provides interactive tools and downloadable charts that veterinarians and horse owners can use to track the growth and health of foals.

Your Local Foal Expert

There is no better resource for specific questions on foal health and nutrition than the veterinarian, and horse owners should refer to their veterinarian for health care recommendations tailored to their mare and foal, Vaala says.

“The Intervet Foal Care Program is intended to support the healthcare program recommended by your veterinarian,” explains Vaala. “Together, horse owners and veterinarians can use the tools and information provided through the Intervet Foal Care Program to create and customize a plan for responsible growth and preventive foal healthcare."

Prestige® IV FoalShot with Havlogen® Equine Vaccine

As part of the new Intervet Foal Care Program, Intervet has introduced Prestige IV FoalShot. It is the first vaccine developed especially for the foal. The new four-way vaccine combines antigens for Eastern and Western Encephalomyelitis (EEE, WEE), Tetanus and Equine Herpes Virus 1 and 4 (EHV-1, EHV-4) in the convenience of a low-volume, low-reaction 1 mL dose. The vaccine does not contain influenza, resolving the concern about maternal antibody interference in young foals.

Other products from Intervet that support healthy foal development include: Regu-Mate® (altrenogest) for mares; Prodigy® to aid in the prevention of abortions caused by EHV-1 infections; Panacur® Paste which helps treat ascarids (roundworms) that virtually all foals are exposed to during the first 6 months of life; PreveNile™ West Nile Virus vaccine; and Flu Avert® I.N. for protection against influenza. Intervet provides complete foal vaccination guidelines in the attached table.

IDEXX Laboratories joins Intervet in new Foal Care program

As part of the new Foal Care Program, Intervet has teamed up with IDEXX Laboratories to provide veterinarians and horse owners information on IDEXX diagnostic resources for brood mare management and newborn foal care.
IDEXX is a worldwide leader in the development and commercialization of innovative technology-based products and services for veterinary applications. The IDEXX Laboratories SNAP® Foal IgG Test quickly and accurately measures the level of the vital IgG antibody in the foal’s system. If inadequate amounts of the antibody exist, veterinarians can quickly administer treatment. IDEXX also offers diagnostic testing to monitor progesterone levels during the first trimester of pregnancy, which is useful for mares at risk for early pregnancy loss.

First steps toward a healthy life

“Foal Care is the industry’s first integrated foal-health program,” says Marv Jahde, Intervet’s Marketing Manager, Equine Products. “Intervet is continually working to provide the most innovative products and services that provide added value for veterinarians and educational resources for horse owners. The Intervet Foal Care Program is intended to simplify life for the veterinarian and horse owner by providing them with an all-inclusive source of information as well as the tools to help track the foal’s health regimen.”
