Aquatic Animals

Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health is the world’s largest developer and marketer of pharmaceuticals and vaccines for aquaculture.

In the United States, the company is best known for developing AQUAFLOR® (florfenicol) , the first new in-feed antibiotic for U.S. aquaculture in more than 20 years.  The broad-spectrum antibiotic is currently approved for control of catfish mortality due to enteric septicemia (ESC) associated with Edwardsiella ictaluri.  It is also the only antibiotic approved for controlling mortality in freshwater-reared salmonids due to Flavobacterium psychrophilum (coldwater disease) and furunculosis associated with Aeromonas salmonicida.

In 2007, AQUAFLOR®-CA1 (florfenicol), became the first and only in-feed antibiotic conditionally approved for the control of mortality in catfish due to columnaris disease associated with Flavobacterium columnare.

Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health also offers two immersion vaccines — AQUAVAC-ESC®, for the prevention of ESC disease due to E. ictaluri infection, and AQUAVAC-COL®, licensed as an aid in the prevention of columnaris disease in catfish due to F. columnare infection.  Together with AQUAFLOR, the two vaccines offer catfish producers a full range of products for managing ESC and columnaris, the most prevalent and economically significant diseases facing the U.S. catfish industry.

In addition, Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health offers CHORULON® (chorionic gonadotropin), an aid in improving spawning function in male and female brood fish.
